Café Jerusalem - 2015

PRODUZIONE COSMASOLA

CAFÈ JERUSALEM is the title of the new album being released this May the 26th 2015 by the Italian based-in-Apulia band RADIODERVISH.

CAFE JERUSALEM contains nine tracks that invite the listener to enter the dimension of the café in the Middle East, revealing to us the multicultural character of a city where tradition and modernity are opposed one to the other.

An imaginative journey inspired by the tales of the Hakawati – storytellers that used to animate the Jerusalem cafes – makes possible for us to naturally access fairy-tale and surreal, parallel dimensions.

The Palestinian cultural heritage, preserved in simple objects, in events, and in the memory of the characters, is shown through the discovery of love for the different and the bitter awareness of the difficulties involved, as inevitable transformations changed the historical course of the land.

Jerusalem, even today, continues to be the focus of a unique conflict, filled with symbols that affect both the history and the conscience of the world.
The songs and the instrumental pieces are inspired by a text, set in the disputed city, conceived by Paola Caridi, writer and journalist who has lived in Jerusalem for more than ten years.

Radiodervish chose to work the arrangements with little overdub so as to pursue a lively, direct sound, reminiscing the sound of an orchestra that actually is the typical formation for cafes in the Middle East.

A light story works as narration glueing the tracks with each other progressively unfolding to the listener. In the foreground we see an almost impossible love between Nura, a Palestinian woman, and a Jew just arrived in the three-time Holy City. In the background we perceive Jerusalem that slides back and forth from an historical dimension to a metaphorical one, often visionary.

The listener could feel like comfortably sitting in an old cafe in Jerusalem, enjoying stories that intersect with each other, sipping a spiced coffee, where sounds and words evoke faded memories of a world that has been experiencing a sweeping transformation since the Thirties of the last century.
